By examining a series of seminal works of art through time, we will follow how human consciousness has imprinted itself in matter via the physical/spatial arts of painting and sculpture, with a few references to architecture. We will practice reading the language of color, line, form, composition, light and dark, etc. without relying on academic interpretations. A number of simple drawing exercises will enhance our capacities to observe.

This course is created to give students a clear understanding of the 3 graphic elements used in making all 2 dimensional art: Color, Value and Form/Composition. While the emphasis will be on color, color values will lead us to a composition arising out of the interaction of color work and the value schemes of tint, tone and shade. Utilizing a landscape format we will explore various color harmonies, value schemes and formal composition structures, all of which will lead us to a simple schematic landscape image.
